![]() However with 44,000 acres of vineyard, Moravian wines are still mostly elusive to the North American market. Moravian wines are not only winning international competitions, but also defining unique characteristics setting them apart from wines of the world. And while drinking in history is an amazing experience, it would not be worthwhile if the wine wasn’t quality. Especially when they house The Czech National Wine Center and the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic inside one of these gothic castles in Valtice. ![]() It’s rolling countryside studded with gothic castles boasts a fairy-tale aura, and it is difficult not to get sucked into the history. Moravia is now known as the Czech Republic’s predominant wine country, producing 96% of the country’s wine. The vineyards and wine culture in the 17th-20th centuries saw destruction, replanting, and advancement in wine academies and wine making, all bringing us to this point of progression in Moravia becoming one of the most elusive, interesting wine regions today. And in 1309, viticultural and wine making regulations were established and the vineyards around Mikulov and Valtice were documented to become the oldest preserved register of the Liechtenstein vineyards. Monasteries helped establish large vineyard areas during the 13th century with grape varieties imported from France and Germany. Emperors dictated plantings of vines in designated areas, and sent wine as gifts to other royals in celebration of births and sacrifices to harvest gods. It’s history of wine making is as captivating as its change in borders and rulers. In the 20th century, Moravia became part of the modern state of Czechoslovakia and subsequently of the Czech Republic after the fall of communism. The rich history of the land has a story dating back to the 2nd century, and is known as a traditional region in Central Europe that served as the center of a major medieval kingdom, known as Great Moravia. Moravia is more than just the section of land that takes up 30% of the whole Czech Republic, bordering the Niederösterreich region of Austria, Slovakia in the east, and Bohemia in the west. The QAPP is based on methods created by EPA scientists and other cyanobacteria specialists, including Dr. The QAPP was developed by EPA Region 1 scientists, including Hillary Snook and others, with the goal of encouraging and facilitating widespread monitoring of cyanobacteria. Our program uses and follows the EPA’s Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) for cyanobacteria monitoring, developed by EPA for the Cyanobacteria Monitoring Collaborative or CMC. If you find a possible cyanobacteria scum near the shore of your pond, take a photo and inform your town health department and APCC at Program MethodologyĪPCC’s cyanobacteria monitoring program provides scientifically sound data on cyanobacteria composition, concentrations, and predicted toxin concentrations. However, as conditions in ponds can change rapidly, APCC recommends following the CDC and MDPH recommendation for ponds with unknown toxin risks: “When in doubt, stay out.” Other types of scum can be caused by pollen or harmless algae in such cases APCC labels them as such in the notes section to avoid confusion. Cyanobacteria scums deemed significant by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health or a town health agent will be marked in the Use Restriction Warranted category on APCC’s interactive map. If a pond has a cyanobacteria scum at one location but no cyanobacteria accumulations at a different location, the location with the cyanobacteria scum may present a higher risk to pond users. Ponds with limited or less significant cyanobacteria scums will be marked in the Potential for Concern category on APCC’s interactive map. MDPH recommends avoiding contact with the pond for a minimum of two weeks after a significant cyanobacteria scum has formed and issuance of an advisory ( ). The presence of a cyanobacteria scum can indicate high toxin levels at that location. Cyanobacteria scum can also collect along the shore as a scum line when winds blow the scum towards the shore. A cyanobacteria scum is one indicator of a cyanobacteria bloom and can be green, blue, brown, or even red in color ( ). This is a floating scum, foam, or mat composed of cyanobacteria. Map color red with crosshatching indicates a municipal advisory has been issued. Due to lower body masses, children and pets are more susceptible to cyanobacteria risks than adults. Children may inadvertently consume pond water while swimming and pet exposure can result from ingestion or directly drinking pond water or from grooming after swimming. Recreational risks are especially high for children and pets following exposure through accidental ingestion of contaminated water. Recreating at this site may cause harm to adults following exposure ( ). Monitoring results at the time and place of sampling indicate the pond is unsafe for recreation by humans and pets based on one or more of the following criteria: 1) presence of microcystin at or above state standards (8 ppb microcystin) as described in MDPH guidance, 2) presence of significant cyanobacteria scum layers according to MDPH guidance, 3) a municipal health agent issues a closure for any other reason related to cyanobacteria. ![]() Following a second arrest in June 2011 related to an alleged assault on an agricultural tractor driver, and a third arrest in November 2012 on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon following an alleged bottle beating on the bus tour he was on, he was charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Such great stories, and overall it’s a moving and superbly written book. I don’t know why I never read this before - maybe it sounded too depressing or something, but boy was I wrong! This was an amazing memoir, and usually I don’t like memoirs at all. Not really a novel, and not particularly new, it’s still a really gripping tale. I can’t believe I hadn’t read this or even heard of it until recently. I’d read Steve Martin’s Shopgirl and enjoyed both the book and the movie, but The Pleasure of My Company is even better. I don’t think of Steve Martin as a writer, but in this tiny little book, he’s created a wonderful, wonderful read. The Pleasure of My Company: A Novella by Steve Martin.I could give a long list of a couple hundred excellent novels I’d recommend, but I’m going to limit myself to a handful that I read or re-read this year, and absolutely loved. The novel has an unquestionably magical power to transport the reader into new worlds, and that is both necessary and unmatched in today’s world of technology. You can’t go wrong by giving a novel as a gift. That said, here’s a list of stuff you can spend your money on, many of them published by corporations. Remember, giving doesn’t have to cost a ton of money, and you don’t need to fall for the corporate propaganda. ![]() I cheerfully call bullshit on that great tradition. I’m listing some of my recommendations below, but this is not an endorsement to go consumerist crazy and get into deep debt. Or give ebooks, which I personally love, and they’re usually cheaper and use far less resources than print books. This is exclusively on books, because, hey, books are one of the best gifts you can give, and you can even find them used sometimes if you’re trying to be frugal and green. So here’s my third attempt at a post on gifts. But the post took too much research and I got lazy. Then I revised the post to show ways to avoid consumerism - to give no gifts, or to give experiences instead of crap that will clutter people’s lives, to give consumables and hand-made things. I intended to do a “Zen Habits Gift Guide”, full of frugal and green gifts that I like, typical of the gift guides you see everywhere at this time of year. Frequent recurrences may need an extended course of oral aciclovir. Herpes simplex can be treated with either topical or oral aciclovir. In immunosuppressed people or patients on chemotherapy, this condition can involve several dermatomes. Herpes zoster lesions are more linear and restricted to one side of the body following a dermatome. Herpes simplex causes small, closely grouped vesicles on a red base and these can be located anywhere on the body, not just the most common sites (lips or genitals). Pain preceding the appearance of the skin lesions is a very important clue to this diagnosis. Both start as a red macule, which soon becomes raised and forms a vesicle. Herpes simplex and herpes zoster cause painful blisters. Ideally, everyone should be treated on the same day and the process repeated a week later. A topical scabicide should be used over the entire skin surface of the infant, and from the neck down for the others. ![]() Treatment for scabies should involve not only the infant, but all members of the household (older children and adults). Using a dermatoscope greatly assists this process, because the head parts of the scabies mite can be seen as a dark triangle under the skin and the burrows of the mite become much more obvious. This is often mistaken for eczema.īoth conditions can coexist and when this occurs, making a correct diagnosis can be a challenge. Unlike scabies in an adult, scabies in a small child or infant can present with small blisters on the base of the feet and the palms. Insect bites are often grouped or linear. Such blisters are often formed on the lower legs and should be treated in the same way as friction blisters, along with oral antihistamines and topical steroids to stop irritation. Insect bites frequently blister, probably as a result of being scratched. Most friction blisters heal without problem, but they can sometimes lead to cellulitis and septicaemia, especially in patients with diabetes, the elderly or the immunosuppressed. If the blister roof is already fully or partially removed, it needs to be treated as a wound, with dressings and possibly an antiseptic or antibiotic cream. Gel plasters can protect smaller blisters and prevent new ones. This relieves the discomfort and protects the site from infection. Such blisters are best managed by draining the fluid from bigger ones with a sterile needle, but leaving the blister roof intact to serve as a dressing. Usually there is no problem with this diagnosis. Poorly fitting shoes are a frequent cause, while on the palms they occur from gripping tools or sports equipment.
